Crosshairs for EZ Quake

Modified versions of Quake like FuhQuake and EZ Quake have allowed  this classic game to endure by adding new features and snappier graphics to both the single and multiplayer game.  And with today's faster processors and quicker Internet connections you won't get stuck on those slanted walls like you used to with your old dial up :-)

The most popular mod now seems to be the EZ Quake Quakeworld client.   If you haven't played Quake in a while, there's a thriving community of deathmatch players out there all over the world waiting to see what you've got.  Dust off those rusty skills,  and see if you can remember where the secrets were.  You can download EZ Quake here: http://ezquake.sourceforge.net/

If you deleted Quake long ago, and no longer have the game, download fQuake here: http://fquake.sourceforge.net/ It's a free version of Quake composed of the original Quake shareware, the EZ Quake Quakeworld client, and several maps.  Just enough to get you back into deathmatch.  The download is a small installer file.  You'll need a stable Internet connection to complete the installation.

ADDING CROSSHAIRS FOR EZ QUAKE

One of the handy new features of EZ Quake is the ability to add crosshairs as simple PNG files. No need to dig into the gfx.wad file.   While the mod comes with 7 crosshairs, if you have any drawing skills it's fairly easy to create your own.   Just follow the instructions in the Quake 3 tutorials, and save as a PNG instead of a TGA.  And you can ignore all the stuff about putting it in a PK3 file.

I hope to have some player created crosshairs here for download eventually, but to get some new crosshairs right away, download any of the Quake 3 crosshairs from this site.  Extract the crosshairj.tga file from the PK3 file (a PK3 is a ZIP file in disguise, so any program that can open a ZIP should handle it) .  Open the TGA file in Paint Shop Pro, or any graphics program with the ability, and save the TGA as a PNG file.

Create a folder called CROSSHAIRS inside your QW folder, and copy the crosshairj.png file to it.  You can rename it to something shorter if you like.  Then using the console (~) inside the game, type crosshairimage yourcrosshairname.png.  Hit ENTER.  To adjust the color, in the console, type crosshaircolor followed by a number from 1 to 255.  Since you'll be starting with a  colored crosshair, you may have to play with the color command a bit to get to to look right.

Once you have the color setting down pat, enter both the above commands into an autoexec.cfg file and put it in your ezquake folder so they will execute for you each time you start the game.
